Seniors have a lot of options when selecting a new living arrangement. Finding a new home at any age is a stressful experience, and transitioning to seniors housing is no different. But knowing what to expect and being prepared can help eliminate much of the worry while discovering many of the benefits seniors housing has to offer.

There is a wide variety of senior living options centered on the lifestyle desires of the senior. Most senior communities are typically for adults over the age of 55. However, not all of these communities are nursing homes, but rather homes that strive to give the senior the most independence possible while still providing the care necessary.

The community that offers the most individual choice is a senior independent living community. These communities offer the senior the nearest thing to living on their own, but with the safety and services of a care-giving community. Seniors may live in their own homes or apartments, but have access to meals, security, transportation and social events. Before selecting a new community, develop a checklist of features that are important and then score each community based on that checklist.

At the other end of the spectrum is an assisted living facility. These facilities offer seniors the opportunity to enjoy social gatherings, get transportation to shopping and beauty or barber shops. Assisted living facility services typically also include meal preparation, emergency medical assistance and home maintenance. While this sampling of other services provides great comfort, there is also the increased level of care provided to assisted living seniors to help ensure that daily physical necessities are met. Seniors often times, depending on their needs, have the option to live alone or in a group.

Selecting senior independent living or an assisted living facility for the senior in your life can be rewarding if each community is evaluated on what is important in terms of living arrangements.
